This video is of my class doing our reading and writing lesson.
Feedback:
- I like how I told my students I would know if they are ready by, 'sitting crisscross applesauce with their books in their laps', and I waited for everyone to be ready.
- I like how I acknowledged my expectation of everyone reading during our choral reading.
- I liked the pace I kept for my choral reading. I was trying to keep a pace that was consistent and steady for the more fluent readers and that was slow for the ones who are struggling.
- I like how I explained what 'suds' were and how people used to wash their clothes. It is important that students can understand the context of the story so, they can understand what is happening in the story.
- I also liked how I allowed for students to have some discussion with each other during the story. It allowed for them to have a moment to get their wiggles out and talk with each other.
- I like how I allowed for the students to respond to the questions that were in the story. It allowed for them to talk and for me to get to know each other.
- I do want to find a different attention grabber that is not "class, class" because, I feel like I use it a lot and I want to mix it up more.
- I like how I set clear expectations for our transition (from the carpet to their tables).
- I like how I took time to talk with a student who wanted to show me something during out transition. I felt like it let her know that I cared about what she had to say/show me.
- I like how I allowed time for the students to write the words before I began writing it for them to see. I wish I would've waited longer for some of the kids who struggle but, I needed to keep the pace for those who were further a long.
- I like how I explained that writing was a 'quiet activity' and then, when I noticed my students were quiet, I acknowledged how quiet they were and how I was so impressed with their ability to be quiet.
- I want to avoid using 'good job'. I want to find ways to emphasize my students work in different ways.
- I like how I let my students point out my mistakes. I feel like it is important for students to see that sometimes teachers make mistakes too.
