Layn Marlow's adorable picture book Hurry Up and Slow Down (New York: Holiday House, 2008) puts a twist on the familiar tale of the tortoise and the hare. This time Hare is the one who slows down—for a bedtime story read by Tortoise. How sweet is that?!
For this activity, all you need is a marker and a sheet of chart paper.
Instructions: After reading the book, ask children to list some things they like to do fast and some things they like to do slowly. Make a t-chart of their ideas. Talk about how when we measure time, we sometimes use the words fast and slow. There are measurement terms kids use all the time but might not recognize as being mathematical.
