DISCLAIMER: Can be difficult to watch.
In light of the many comments received, I think I need to expand a bit on the video.
This video is about Early Attachment Experiments done by Harry Harlow, and how attachment offers a safe place from which to explore the world and deal with uncertainty.
This is one of the very first studies recorded concerning behavior. The early history of this field is very difficult to stomach. Studies were done on young primates, and even human infants. Were these experiments done today, they would most certainly break many ethics regulations, and in some cases, even break the law.
I first saw this video in a Psychology class in college, and it made my stomach turn. While it did show that emotional attachment is an essential part of a healthy psychological development of a primate, it also showed how damaging not having this attachment can be.
I put this video up for some of my students to view, and can see how it has upset some viewers. I can't blame them- it isn't an easy watch. I do hope, however, that it can make viewers think about the importance of early attachment- be it with their own children, if they are students of the psychological sciences then to spread the message as they continue on their professional path, or even owners of young pups.
This information is important. The lack of a solid attachment foundation can have lifelong consequences. I hope that the more people know, the better prepared they can be in helping those they come in contact with in their own lives.
